Why You Should Watch On Sunday Instead of NFL Football:

Kevin. Freaking. Na. Need I say more?

Okay yes I am kidding, we all wanted to watch the return of Tiger Woods at the Safeway Open this weekend, and we will have to settle for a field of 143 sub-par golfers and Kevin Na (golf pun totally intended). So I wasn’t totally kidding, I do think Kevin Na is a sneaky good golfer due for a breakthrough year. He is consistent and we all know he works harder than almost everyone else for obivious reasons.

Kevin Na in all his glory

In all honesty, the Safeway Open will definitely not have the household names that every golf fan knows, however that doesn’t mean it will be any less entertaining. Unlike most sports, golfers do not need a 3-4 + month offseason to recover. While most of the top players in the world will take some time off and only play a few of the events between now and the start of the new year, many players looking to get a jump in the FedEx Cup standings will be in attendance.

Furthermore, let’s look back at some of the first time event winners in the 2015-16 wrap around season: Emiliano Grillo, Justin Thomas, Russell Knox, Smylie Kaufman. These guys all showed throughout the 2015-16 PGA season that they are the real deal. The next generation of golfers have this opportunity to prove themselves before the return of the top players.

Lastly, while this is the first installment of this event under the name Safeway Open, it was previously known as the Frys.com Open and four of the past eight years, the tournament has ended in a playoff. Now I do not think anything compares to playoff hockey, however in my opinion, playoff golf is the next most exciting. Playoff basketball, baseball, and even football can be slow at times. Playoff golf is sneakily nonstop on-the-edge-of-your seat excitement. Add in the fact that the entire gallery floods to one hole for playoff golf and you get goosebumps with the level of excitement and crowd noise. Every shot matters, the pressure is immense. Just watching Rory Mcilroy vs Ryan Moore play four playoff holes at East Lake a few weeks back was unbelievable. One shot could have been the difference between Rory winning $13 million dollars or Dustin Johnson winning the prize as FedEx Cup Champion.

I predict this year’s Safeway Open will come down to an exciting playoff and I hope one of the bigger names: Phil Mickelson, Paul “Forearms” Casey, or Justin Thomas are involved.
