Analysis

Although it is not the most star-studded tournament, the FedEx St. Jude classic is sure to deliver. (Get it?) With few household names in the field, it might be the perfect week to bet on some of the top golfers… Or bet on the Belmont. But let's face it, the best thing to do is bet on both. While many of the past winners of the tournament have small wikipedia writeups, let's take a look at some of the big names in the field this week.

While Dustin Johnson has yet to win a tournament this year, he has yet to miss the cut. He seems to be competing in every tournament down to the wire. The skinny field leaves DJ as the favorite at +650 going into this Memphis hosted tournament.

Brooks Koepka was topped by Sergio only weeks ago. Actually, Koepka pulled a Sergio at the Bryon Nelson going into the water on the first shot of the playoff. For those not familiar with Koepka, he's an up and comer and he's here to stay. Choking against the choker will not be your lasting memory of Brooks.

Fellow Seminole, Daniel Berger, might be the having the best season for a golfer you probably don't know much about. I discussed Koepka and Berger heading into the Players Championship, and this is a tournament I could envision either winning. Berger didn't have his best at the Memorial, but he finished top 20 in the 5 events leading up to that (including top 10 at Masters and Players). Furthermore, I feel whenever I discuss Berger, it's necessary to include this.

Phil Mickelson comes into the tournament at +1400, tied with Koepka for 2nd best odds. Phil has finished T-2, T-11, and T-3 in the past three St. Jude's Classics. He's definitely someone to consider coming into this tournament. And, like him or hate him, he's as charitable as they come.

Putting a touching video like that in a post makes me feel a little more charitable today. I feel like I did a good thing. Will Phil's good karma bring him a victory? We'll see. I think you have a great shot to cherry-pick one of the above golfers and find a winner… or go out on a limb this week.

Other notables in the field this week include:

Ryan Palmer, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Gary Woodland, Colt Knost, and Ernie Els
