Ceremonial Tee Shot: Masters Week Preview

Final Four… Opening day… Playoff hockey… Playoff basketball… NFL draft… Heck, throw Wrestlemania in there if you please. Is there a better month for sports than April? Is there anything better than getting home from work, then working out, cooking dinner, going to the bathroom, feeding your fish, burning your dinner, pouring a nice glass of your favorite beverage, and knowing you’ll be watching sports until you pass out? Yes, my friends, there is one thing. Whether it’s streaming Amen Corner from the office or dressing in your best khakis and heading to your favorite watering hole, there is no event like the Masters. Majestic, noble, respectful, ritzy, and traditional, the Masters is everything we wanted to be growing up. Kick back, pour an iced tea and lemonade (and maybe a little something extra), and enjoy the ride!

Monday, April 4th: If you’re mentally ill or will do anything to avoid working, you can feast your eyes on a bunch of players moseying around the driving range. Beginning at 12:00 on Masters.com and CBS Sports Network, watch the likes of Charley Hoffman talk to his swing coach and Brandt Snedeker take a couple hacks with his 9 iron.

Tuesday, April 5th: Take Tuesday off. You earned it! Or watch more range coverage which will be aired on CBS Sports Network all week.

Wednesday, April 6th: Hump day you can check out the Par 3 Contest sans Rory McIlroy (big week in the cards for Rory- more to come in Masters picks). Contest begins streaming at 3:00. 80 holes-in-one have been made at the event. I’ll never get one so I’ll be sure to check it out.

Thursday, April 6th: Thursday’s the day! Amen Corner stream begins at 10:45. Furthermore, coverage of holes 15 & 16 and the featured groups begins an hour later. TV coverage starts at 3:00 for rounds 1-3 and 2:00 on Sunday. It is one of the biggest travesties that I’ll never understand- why does TV coverage start so late?

Recent Winners:

2015 – Jordan Spieth

2014 – Bubba Watson

2013 – Adam Scott

2012 – Bubba Watson

2011 – Charl Schwartzel

Three to Beat:

In this major tournament, there are the top dogs, then there’s everyone else. Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy represent the new era of golf, and what’s not to love? The top 3 in the world were co-favored in Vegas at 7-1 when the Masters odds were first released.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Day is the hottest golfer in the world riding a two tournament win streak into Augusta while having three top 10 finishes this season. Two top 3 finishes at the Masters ain’t to shabby for the Aussie either.

Don’t look now, but here comes Rory. McIlroy has two top 10s including a semifinal loss last week to eventual winner, Jason Day. No girl drama this year leaves Rory with improved focus while aiming for the one major to elude him so far during his career. Two top 10s in the past two Masters sets up nicely for Rory.

Reigning Masters Champ, Jordan Spieth, is coming off a weekend of partyingboating (new word I just invented) with Rickie Fowler and other beautiful people (pictured below). Those are the types of intangibles that can’t be taught on the driving range. One win on the season and three top 10 finishes are nice touches on the 2016 resume so far. As Jordan rounds Amen Corner Sunday, he'll be saying: “Oh and Virginia, just so you know, my jacket size is 44 long… and my right arm is a little longer than my left.“  Spieth wins for second year going away? Don’t count it out. He’s that good.

7:6 guy to girl ratio. That look in Rickie's eyes says TWO guys go home alone…

The Best from the Rest:

Golf Boys legend, Rickie Fowler, thinks a green jacket would go nicely with his orange juice outfit.  He's playing great golf and could be in line to make the jump this season (a la Jason Day in 2015).

The man from Bagdad, Florida (aka Hicksville aka the Boonies aka look it up on a map it and everything you know about Bubba makes sense), Bubba Watson, will surely have a say in this year's tournament. the 2-time Masters champ could easily turn his recent hot-streak into green jacket number 3.

Has anyone played as well as Dusty "the great one's daughter's husband" Johnson did in 2015 and not win a major? The guy got cleaned-up (good for him) and he was flat-out electric. He could parlay his best Masters performance to date in 2015 with another top 10 this year.

Others to watch on moving day: Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson, Hideki Matsuyama, Louis Oosthuizen, and Patrick Reed

3-Putt Group:

This is my most insufferable threesome heading into the Masters. I'm not gonna bother with Ian Poulter's wardrobe, in fact, it's so outrageous, I kind of respect it. He recently got a heckler fired from his job though. With that being said, no further comment.

The sun is setting on Sergio Garcia. The poor guy might need to be taken out back with Old Yeller soon. I almost feel bad for the guy at this point. He has come so close, yet, hasn't been able to string 4 rounds together to win a major. With that being said, I still get a laugh when he's in contention and shanks one hard. Keep it up, Sergio!

This last one may be unpopular in some circles: Matt Kuchar or "Mr. Vanilla" as I like to call him. He's actually done well at Augusta with three top 10s in the past four years. He's too clean cut for me. I just don't trust him. He has the Sketchers sponsorship for one. Also, when he gets "mad," he doesn't just avoid swearing, he goes so PG- very clean like "c'mon, Matty" or his recent "aww turd." He essentially seems like the type of guy who wears a t-shirt in the pool. Need him to go on a Tiger tear through porn stars or say he has a foot fetish. Mix it up, dude.

Blast from the Past:

Tiger Woods pulled a Brett Favre. Will he or won't he? He won't. Also, he was posting 80/1 odds prior to his decision. How…?

Jim Furyk won't play the Masters due to recent surgery. Shame. Love seeing the Grinder perform under the brightest lights.

Sans 2015, you can nearly always guarantee Freddy Couples will be hanging around on moving day. So awesome. Class act.
